THE CONSENT PLAYGROUND

Learning about consent trough puppetry

How would it be to live in a world where people can truly express what they do and don’t want? Where you consciously feel whether a ‘yes’ is really a ‘yes’, or if it might actually be a ‘no’. What if we would learn to communicate about consent from a young age?

Consent is conscious mutual agreement. It occurs in many different situations and contexts of our everyday lives, something of which we are not always aware. It presents itself through communication between people; when you give consent, you profoundly and consciously say ‘yes’ to each other.

The Consent Playground is a series of workshops where children aged between 10-12 explore the topic of consent. Through puppetry techniques, children learn that there are different ways to express whether they do or don’t want something, using words or body language. They also learn to recognize these signals in others.

The exercises in the workshop are based on the principle of embodied learning, which involves learning through physical engagement. Scientific research shows that this approach enhances understanding, attention, and memory.

With her workshops Denise Huigen also wants to stimulate creativity, a skill that is receiving little attention in many Dutch primary schools, despite being essential for development, self-expression, and independent thinking. By creating their own puppets and experimenting through play, children are invited to use their imagination and give shape to their own feelings and ideas.
